Disgusting Science!

 



When we were looking up some Science experiments to explore, Science Club were intrigued about a 'snot' experiment. Yuck! To make this gross experiment we needed gelatin, corn syrup, hot water and food colouring. We mixed it altogether and ended up with a rather sticky, disgusting substance as you can see below!

 

 

The science behind this experiment-yes there was science involved! - real life mucus is made of sugar and protein. Our fake 'snot' had sugar and protein in- just like in real life! The stringy bits are strands of protein!

Vitamin C Explosions!

We explored Vitamin C and water to see what would happen. First of all we started with film canisters but we soon moved to the tubes that the vitamins came in. Look at the video below for an example of one experiment.

Making Flubber

 



We made some Flubber in Science Club. We had to use Borax, cold and hot water and food colouring. Some were really slimy and others quite rubbery. It was great fun!

Expanding Gummy Minions!

In Science Club this week, we experimented with some gummy bears. Well, minions. 

We experimented with some gummy sweets in hot water and then some cold water. We realised that it would take some time with cold water for anything to happen, so we left the gummy minions safely in Miss Moffat's classroom. Miss T and Miss Moffat were there for us at lunchtime today to visit the magically expanding minions.

You can tell from the photographs below that they certainly changed. 

We discussed how the water molecules would move into the minion which would make the minion grow. With the hot water, we could instantly see the sweet begin to dissolve. It was all very interesting! 

As we like to try different things, we also used lemonade and oil, to see how they reacted. Take a look at the photos! The gummy heart in lemonade was interesting as the foamy part of the sweet looked VERY different. 

Skittles Experiment in Science Club

Our first Science Club session was very colourful. The children worked in a pair or a three to explore what would happen if we added a little drop of water to Skittles. Some children predicted that the colour might run (we even had the word 'dissolve') and it would make a rainbow.

We then decided to change one thing at a time (as real scientists do) to explore what would happen. We had the choice of using m & m's, oil, lemonade and vinegar.

After the experiments, we had a discussion about the liquids we used and the Science behind the experiment. We found out that Skittles are made out of ingredients that are prone (more likely) to dissolve in water. It happens quite quickly, so they're a fun experiment for children. 

Millie explained that the vinegar made the skittles dissolve more quickly because they were acidic.

True Colours

Today STEM club tried their hand at chromatography. They were able to separate the colours within different felt pens. Who knew black contained pink and blue?
